Inbox Workflow

The inbox is where the infection surveillance process begins. It is used to filter through the many electronic records retrieved from hospital information systems, view ancillary patient details and determine whether or not a follow-up should be performed.

  1. Filter Data (Inbox Search Details) – there are five different inboxes that present data for laboratory results, admissions, pharmacy, radiology, and surgical procedures. For each inbox, you can narrow the events displayed down to a single organism, location, medication or procedure.
  2. Review Details (Inbox Result Types ) – once the events are displayed, you can view patient-related information. A patient’s infection history, for example, may be enough reason to add them to your follow-up list.
  3. Note: The event Details link is only available in the Laboratory TestClosedThe type of test or service that was requested. A single order may require 1 or more tests to be performed., Surgical Procedure and Radiology Results inboxes (The RL6:Infection Inbox Page).
  4. Make Decisions ( RL6:Infection Follow-up Actions) – based on the information you reviewed, you will decide which follow-up action is required. Clicking Yes, for example, creates a new surveillance file (Infection File Workflow Overview).
    1. Removed from Inbox – choosing any follow-up action removes the event from the inbox when the search is refreshed.
    2. Remains in Inbox – you may choose to leave the event Unread, which will keep the event in the inbox.
    3. Updated Results– If you have the INBOX_UPDATED_AS_UNPROCESSED GSP( Working with General System Parameters) set to YES, you will see all updated results automatically in the inbox. So if the event you removed has been updated, it will display in the inbox again. You will have to perform another follow-up action in order to remove the event from the inbox. If the Ask again if results updatefollow-up action is selected, the event may reappear in the inbox later and you will also have to perform another follow-up action to remove the event.
