Setting a Denominator

Denominators provide context to what is being shown in the main part of the report. They can be used to determine, for example, if the number of infections is increasing because the hospital is busier. The selected options in the Show and Filter sections define the numerator. Denominators can be calculated (Using Calculated Denominators) from data captured by RL6:Infection or manually entered (Using a Manual Denominator) if it comes from another source. In the example below, the numerator is divided by the denominator to provide a rate.

  1. Denominators can be presented in a number of ways (Understanding Denominator Presentation). In this example, the denominator is calculated as a rate.
  2. When a table is included in the report (Selecting the Chart Type), the denominator is shown in parenthesis next to the numerator.
  3. There are two ways to add a denominator to a report:
    1. Manually Entered (Using a Manual Denominator) – when the information comes from an external system, you can create denominators by specifying dates, values and counts.
    2. Calculated (Using Calculated Denominators) – information collected in RL6:Infection can be used to compute denominators, similar to how the Show section is completed.
