Building an Expression

An expression is created from one or more statements. Each statement must have a Field, an OperatorClosedThe instructions used to evaluate a number, date or text string: greater than (>), equal to (=), or contains, to name a few. Operators are use to build ad hoc searches, report parameters and alert conditions. and at least one Value. Statements are linked together using AND or OR connectors.

To build an expression:

  1. Access Expression Editor (page 1).
  2. Select a Field (page 1).
  3. Select an Operator (page 1).
  4. Enter the Value by which the field is evaluated.
  5. Note: The selected Field type determines the Value types available for selection or manual entry. Users will not be able to enter a text value (e.g. name) when comparing with a date field (e.g. EventClosedA patient or employee related occurrence which is recorded in paper or electronic format. Once recorded, an event file is reviewed by a file manager who may involve other individuals (e.g. using tasks and follow-ups features) to help investigate and resolve the event. Date).
  6. Add more criteria to the same group of statements by clicking New Line or Duplicate Line from a statement’s drop-down list (not shown).
  7. Add nested criteria with a connector:
    1. AND – require that all statements must be met.
    2. OR – requires at least one statement must be met.
  8. Optional: Click the Undo button to undo your last action. You can undo as many actions as needed.
  9. Repeat steps 2 through 6 to add more evaluators.
  10. Note: Expressions are saved by clicking Save or OK. If editing from full screen Expression Editor, click Exit Full Screen to return to the regular screen size.
