Defining Patient Search Criteria

Administrators can determine how search criteria is handled in Patient Center. There are two options: (1) users are required to enter the exact MRN number or the beginning of name when searching for patients or (2) user are given the flexibility to enter any combination of partial patient information.

To determine the required criteria for patient searches:

  1. Open Patient Library Management, (not shown, see Configuring Patient Search).
The Search Properties tab displays as the first tab.
  2. In the Patient Search Criteria section, select one of the options:
    • Exact match on MRN or beginning of name – This option requires that the user knows the exact MRN of the patient or at least the first letters of the first or last name. Multiple search strings (e.g., combination of first and last name) must be separated by commas, and results will match all search strings entered. This is the default option.
    • Partial match on MRN, name, or other fields – This option uses full-text index to give the user more flexibility to enter partial information, such as part of the MRN or name, or to search additional fields (i.e., Date of Birth or Gender). Multiple search strings can be separated by commas or spaces. If there are multiple strings in the criteria, then returned results must have a match in at least one of the fields (i.e., MRN, First Name, Last Name, Date of Birth or Gender).
  3. Click Save.
  4. Click Exit to return to the Admin Center .
