File Locks

When a user opens a file, a file lock is created in the RL6 database. When another user attempts to access a locked file, a message stating that the file can only be opened in read-only mode displays. When the user closes the file, logs out, navigates to another RL6 page, or reaches a session time out, the file lock is released. If the user’s session ends abnormally, such as when the browser closes while a file is open, the computer powers off, the network connection is lost or the user navigates to a non-RL6 page using the address bar, the file lock is also released.

Tip: Here are some possible scenarios to be aware of when accessing and saving files under Act As mode:

  • If User A is working on a file and User B acts as User A and accesses this file, a warning will display that the file is currently locked by User A.
  • If User A acts as User B and locks a file by ending a session unconventionally (i.e., closing the browser window without saving and exiting the file, unexpected system shutdown), the file lock passes to the user he was impersonating, User B.
  • If User A locks a file by the same means, and User B attempts to access the file while acting as User A, the warning will display that the file is locked by User A.

Administrators can view existing file locks and manually remove them when necessary.
