Available Organism and Isolate Settings

The available setting for organisms and isolates are described below:

Table 5-9: Available Organism and Isolate Settings

Code

Description

Example

Not Wanted

The organism/isolate will only be displayed in the Lab Inbox if it accompanies 1 or more other organism(s) not tagged this way. Otherwise the result will be shown only in the Patient Record.

Skin flora is not of significance to infection control staff and is usually tagged with this code.

Organism_Significant

(shown as SIG in the spreadsheet)

These organisms/isolates will ALWAYS be displayed in the Lab Inbox no matter what other rules are applied.

MRSA and VRE as well as other reportable organisms and isolates are tagged with this code.

Organism_MDRO

These organisms/isolates will ALWAYS be displayed in the Lab Inbox no matter what other rules are applied. This allows different groupings of those organisms that are important to infection control.

These usually relate to those that match entries in the pick list Integration.Microbiology.OrganismAttributeList.

Organism_xxx

(e.g., RPT in the spreadsheet)

These organisms/isolates will ALWAYS be displayed in the Lab Inbox no matter what other rules are applied. This allows different groupings of those organisms that are important to infection control.

Other reportable organisms and isolates may be tagged with a client defined code “xxx”.

<<empty>>

This is the default setting and implies a standard organism.

These organisms/isolates are checked for growth/abnormality and interpreted according to the different rules set for the specimen and growth.

Staphylococcus species, for example, may be required to go into the Patient Record only for some specimens as no further organism identification was performed by the lab.
