Invalid Constraint Set Messages

Prerequisite: You must have the 'Constraints' role function enabled.

When an existing file is opened in management mode, the values contained in the fields bound by the constraint set are analyzed. If the combination(s) are no longer valid, a message similar to the following is displayed:

Note: This message is not shown for files in the state Incomplete or Deleted-Inc.

Front line staff and file managers will only see this message when they open a file after one of the following things happen:

  • The administrator modifies the pick list values for one or more fields in the constraint set and/or the constraint set combinations are modified. In this case, the value selected either no longer exists or the original combination is no longer valid.
  • A constraint set is added to an existing submission or management form. For the graphic above, this is the likely culprit. If a constraint set had been in place at the time the file was submitted, there would be no way to select Russia for the Country and District of Columbia for the State/Province. Once the constraint set is added to the management form, however, the system recognizes this is an invalid option.

This is an informational message. The user clicks OK and continues to the form. The old value remains in the field even though it is no longer valid. The user can open the pick list and selects another value to make the constraint valid, if desired – but this is not required. If the pick list item was removed there is no way to reselect it once a new value has been set.
